Don't Confuse What You Missed for What Didn't Happen

People of the conservative/Trumpist flavor like to say progressives only care about ICE because the media told them to, and that nobody pushed back on this during Obama.

I was present for that fight in the Obama years, so I know that is a lie.

What happened was that family detention ramped up, and in response, people drove in large numbers to obscure towns where detention centers were located to protest.

People went on hunger strike, and many Democrats in Congress pushed to close these facilities.

None of that made your feed or your news channel.

That's because your algorithm determined you aren't the type of person to care about that.

Maybe you truly aren't, or maybe you were just being manipulated by having key information omitted from your consciousness. I don't know which it is.

What I do know is that the fights were happening at the facilities in Texas, Pennsylvania and at the White House, not in the streets, because the crisis was contained to a handful of buildings.

Now it's home invasions and people getting shot on camera in cities.

Of course the volume of pushback changed. That's because the threat did.

If you weren't paying attention to any of that, that's on you and your algorithm, not on the people who were out there standing up to the government. Which, in this case, was led by Obama, the president many in the progressive community voted for.

It's OK to push back against people you vote for. It's a good thing.

And when you decide a group is only in the streets because the media manufactured their outrage, you're not making an educated observation at all. You're just giving yourself an excuse to stop taking their concerns seriously.

That is your right, I suppose, although given that this is a democracy, caring what others think is rather preferred and wise.

But don't confuse what you missed for what didn't happen, because it's not the same thing.
