I Use AI Constantly and Deeply Distrust Parts of the System Building It

By Christine Ann O'Connell · · Originally published on Facebook

Confession:

I use AI constantly.

I also deeply distrust parts of the system building it.

Welcome to my extremely inconvenient position.

I have a slightly annoying position on AI: I’m wildly excited about what it lets people do.

AND…

I think we should be asking much harder questions about how it is being deployed.

I’ve spent stupid amounts of time (and yes, money) figuring out how AI works and where it is going.

So this isn’t coming from someone standing outside yelling:

“TECHNOLOGY BAD.”

Quite the opposite.

I think AI could un-dam an extraordinary amount of human creativity. I’ve experienced that myself.

Ideas that sat in my head for YEARS can suddenly become things I can actually make real.

That’s incredible.

But we are rapidly moving from AI as something you ask questions…

To AI as an agent that knows your work, your preferences, your decisions, your relationships, your beliefs...

All the context required to become incredibly useful.

And incredibly difficult to replace.

And at the exact same time, the companies offering us this extraordinary leverage aren’t neutral infrastructure.

They have business models, incentives, values.

And, in some cases, a pretty questionable track record when it comes to attention, power, privacy and human behavior.

So yes…

I want the leverage.

I just don’t want to hand over the keys without understanding who I’m handing them to.

THAT is the trigger point I think we need to talk about.

I don’t want fear deciding which tools people use.

And I definitely don’t want convenience deciding either.

So I'm running a 90-minute session called Trigger Point: AI.

We’ll look at the opportunity, the power structure, the business models, the dependency problem.

The extraordinary creative potential.

And the practical decisions you can make while those decisions are still yours to make.

There will be no AI evangelism or AI panic.

Just a clear-eyed look at what we’re walking into.
