Not to be rude, but if you've got a problem with the US funding risky research in bio labs in China, realize that all of that is a function of poor bioweapons treaties that don't require oversight or address dual-use issues. It is not a conspiracy.
A conspiracy is defined as a secret plan, a hidden agreement, and a group effort by two or more people to do something illegal, harmful, or bad.
While Republicans initially supported efforts around these treaties, since about 2000 they have blocked efforts to give these treaties any meaningful teeth. That's not a partisan opinion; it's just what you can see if you look at voting records.
That someone in the US government, in this case Dr. Anthony Fauci, was involved in this is not that surprising.
All of the congresspeople feigning shock that these kinds of things occur in our name is laughable, really laughable, because they all get briefed on the various nefarious things the US does in areas such as this. And they are feigning that shock to stimulate your emotions.
Why?
I believe in a world without these kinds of weapons or experiments, but as long as we continue to create hostility among nations, where everyone needs to do dangerous research to prepare for future threats, these issues are inevitable.
I say we fight for that world, not with each other.
That will be difficult as long as Republicans try to frame this issue along party lines, when in fact all of this is the logical outcome of a politics of enemy creation, whether abroad or at home. It will also be difficult if Democrats pretend they haven't been privy to what kinds of science get done in the name of defense and national security.
Dr. Fauci is just the fall guy here. While I agree with Rand Paul on some select issues, he's full of it on this one, and anyone who isn't seeing that is not looking at the international historical context of this issue.
More importantly, many are not asking why he is trying to stimulate emotions in this way, right now.
Who benefits?
