It's pretty scary that a commentator whose whole shtick is that James Talarico is a master deceiver has three million followers. So let me explain what's actually going on.
Conservative flavors of Christianity, Judaism and Islam (as well as all the other religions, frankly) all oppress women and minorities and are weirdly obsessed with killing.
Regular people grow tired of this. We understand that killing is necessary at times, but we don't feel a need to center our identity around it. We understand it can be uncomfortable to engage with people different from us, but we don't feel a need to create an identity that excludes people just because they make us uncomfortable.
Regular people are also willing to listen when someone preaches religious values that don't involve those things. At the end of the day, normal people don't want to oppress others or be fixated on killing people, and it's a relief to hear a religious person advocating not to do that. That's why people are cheering.
People are not cheering for you because they are tired of listening to your fixations on killing and exclusion. You're welcome to change that about yourself at any time, and then people will cheer, because we will be happy for you. It's not really that big of a mystery or conspiracy. It's just hard to see if you're deep in the hole of your one favorite religion.
People are not sick of listening to you because you are enforcing immigration. They are sick of listening to you because you are dehumanizing people, kicking in doors in the community, and telling unwitting Americans that immigrants eat cats.
People are not sick of listening to you because you are opposing socialism. They are sick of listening to you because, as you do so, you provide no meaningful policy proposals that help poor people, and once again you resort to dehumanizing poor people to achieve your agenda.
People are not sick of listening to you because you want to have intelligent discussions about how we might accommodate extremely small portions of society, such as trans people. It's because the only way you can have those conversations is to dehumanize them, ignore the reality that they have been murdered, abused and discriminated against for decades, and act as if you know what is best for them. The list goes on and on.
Ultimately, we are reacting to a profound lack of insight. And we are realizing that we can have hard conversations without reducing others to subhuman levels, without treating others like garbage, and without claiming superiority just because we do or don't belong to one religion or another.
